Graduate Work Showcase

Below is a collection of my work from my Master's in Educational Technology (MAET) at Michigan State University. For information about the courses these works were completed in see my annotated transcript.

The work chosen falls into three main categories that were areas of learning that were valuably stretched during this program:

  • Curiosity - Questioning is such a valuable skill as an educator, a learner and as a human. Curiosity about my own practice has led me in ways that have stretched and grown me as an educator. Intentionally creating safe spaces for students to cultivate and explore questions has become a core value of mine as an educator through the MAET program.

  • Identity - As an educator, I want to both see and value the identity of each student as well as give them access to valuing the diverse experiences and identities of others . I want my students to both feel seen in the materials in my classroom and get a window into experiences and identities different than their own.

  • Technology - MAET broadened my understanding of technology as well as stoked a creativity in its application within the classroom. Showcased here are some of the ways I've learned to use technology as well as some of the technology resource I have become familiar with through the program.

This game was created by Anne Heinicke, Bethany Kinnan and myself as a way to stoke curiosity in our students and engage them in the question asking process. I believe that “questioning is a classic case of the more you do it, the easier it gets” so I want to bake into my lesson plans more opportunities like this game for students to inquire and generate questions. This game highlights my creativity in creating engaging opportunities with students and my valuing of students' questions.

This poster poster represents how I bring passion and curiosity to my work as an educator. It explores how questioning is impacted by my passion and curiosity in my professional context and illustrates my reflections on my learning from the Mindsets for Innovation strand of the MAET (Master's in Educational Technology) program. This poster highlights my own flexible and curious mindset and ways in which I bring that into the classroom.

?

I created this group project to help promote inquiry on a higher-order level. Each student within the group generates 2 higher-order questions pertaining to Romeo & Juliet. They select one group member's question to then research and answer. This demonstrates my ability within Canva and my creativity in developing assessments. This also highlights my ability in  creating inquiry opportunties for students.

This research poster, developed by Anne Heinicke, Bethany Kinnan and myself, highlights a need to have diverse texts in the classroom. Using a metaphor developed by Rudine Sims Bishop about having texts that students can see themselves in (mirrors), seeing other identities and perspectives different than their own (windows) and being able to step into another's shoes (sliding glass doors) benefits all students. This poster illustrates my ability to professional collaborate, research and extend research into digital spaces.

Opportunity gap is a wicked problem that Maura Ehrlich, Paige Matteson and I researched and synthesized here in a poster. The poster illustrates approaches to possible solutions that Maura, Paige and I developed. Opportunity Gap is a messy problem without a clear solution but this poster and my teaching practice illustrate even so, we don't throw in the towel. We continue to innovate and persevere for the good of our students. This highlights my value that every student matters, deserves to be heard, seen and validated as well as have access to the same resources.

This Spanish final is an authentic assessment that gives students a diverse approach to showing what they learn beyond a paper and pencil multiple-choice test as well as expose them to diverse experiences they can use their Spanish in. In Pre-Spanish I, their final for the food unit was to ask in Spanish for food and then I would give them the food they asked for to eat. This blog illustrates how well this assessment fit my students' needs and strengthened their confidence in their speaking skills in Spanish. I developed this assessment and it shows my creativity to more authentically assess my students.

Inspired by the MakerEd movement, this is a lesson I developed for my middle school world history class. Students needed to label a map with Athens & Sparta without using any words. This challenged students to create new approaches to map making. This lesson wove in all sorts of technology - including Makey makey as well as virtual dice and plain old play dough. This lesson highlights my ability to weave my knowledge of technology, pedagogy and content into a creative and challenging lesson for students. I taught this lesson during the 22-23 school year and students loved it. Multiple parents brought it up as one that their children came home and told them about excitedly.

This collection of resources I cultivated to recommend to others describes the affordances (possibilities) and constraints (limitations) of each. The list also highlights my own creations with each resource. These recommended resources demonstrate my own prowess with technological resources and my ability to craft recommendations.
